A citizens group is collecting signatures to get the city to hold a special election that would stop a shopping center from being built on the Marblehead coastal site. The residents instead want the property owner to turn the 250-acre parcel into a resort hotel with residential homes.

The San Clemente Citizens for Responsible Development is spearheading the petition drive. Chairman Gene Habich said nearly 5,000 signatures have been collected (signatures from 15% or 3,900 of the city’s registered voters is the minimum). Once the signatures are submitted to the city clerk and verified by the registrar of voters office, the City Council can vote to restore the original land use, as defined in the General Plan, or hold a special election so residents may vote on how the land should be developed.
