UCI Upsets No. 2 UCLA in Volleyball

The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team defeated UCLA for the first time in 37 tries, knocking off the second-ranked Bruins in five games Wednesday at Pauley Pavilion.

The unranked Anteaters (6-7, 4-6 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) won, 15-12, 9-15, 4-15, 15-13, 15-13.

Mike Rupp, who had a match-high 30 kills, closed out the victory with an ace in the fifth game. Donnie Rafter had 28 kills and 15 digs and Cori Hinkle had 85 assists for UCI.

Danny Farmer had 25 kills for the Bruins (11-3, 9-2), whose eight-match winning streak ended.

In nonconference baseball:

Chapman 12, Cal Lutheran 1--Erik Maurer shut out Cal Lutheran on three hits over six innings to help the Panthers at Hart Park.

First baseman Eric Albright hit his second homer of the season in the fifth inning for the Panthers (8-0).

Concordia 8, Cal State San Bernardino 3--Jimmy Pickel (2-1) went seven innings and struck out six batters for host Concordia.
