La Reina Captures Mock Trial Title
La Reina High School, an all-girls campus, beat three other schools this week to win the 16th annual Mock Trial Competition, school officials said Friday.
The La Reina team, which held the title four consecutive years between 1994-97, will represent Ventura County at the statewide finals in Riverside on March 26-28, county schools Supt. Charles Weis said.
Members of the La Reina team competed against students from Oxnard, Buena and Channel Islands high schools Thursday night in courtrooms at the Hall of Justice at the Ventura County Government Center in Ventura.
There were four trials held with each school’s team serving once on defense and once as the prosecution. The mock case involved a 19-year-old charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Sitting judges, who volunteered their time, issued the verdicts. The winning team was determined by a panel of working lawyers who scored students on persuasive speaking and technical courtroom skills.
The runner-up in the competition was Oxnard High School, followed in third by Buena and in fourth by Channel Islands.
