Secession and Water Rates
* San Fernando Valley residents need to know that water rates will increase if the Valley secedes from the city of Los Angeles due to a surcharge imposed on all water service provided outside the city, as established by ordinance 170435 effective June 1, 1995.
Costs for public services in Los Angeles, such as street repair, street lights, tree trimming and garbage collection are paid for by city taxes. If the Valley secedes, residents will most likely have to pay higher taxes to cover the costs for these services farmed out to private contractors since the tax base will have shrunk considerably.
