Library Program Mixes Reading With Puppets

Share

A new program at the Glendale Public Library invites children to make puppets based on stories they read, as part of the library’s first puppet series, running through the end of January.

“We find we use the word ‘puppet,’ and they come,” said Mindy Liberman, manager of the library’s children’s room, referring to the success of previous puppet-making activities there. Although the library has sponsored individual puppet programs before, this is its first series, Liberman said. The program was made possible by a $500 grant from the Soroptimist International of Glendale.

The series, expected to attract 40 to 50 kids per session, is part of the library’s year-round story and crafts program, which tries to make reading a fun experience for kids by linking it to activities.

“Having craft activities connected to the stories helps them remember the stories and make it a full experience,” Liberman said. “They’ll read better and more if they like what they’re getting from the reading.”

The free program will be held on Wednesdays and most Saturdays in January at the Glendale Public Library, 222 E. Harvard St.

Children ages 6 and older are invited to the Wednesday sessions from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 6, 13, 20 and 27. Children ages 4 and older may attend the Saturday sessions from 2 to 3 p.m. on Jan. 9, 23 and 30.
