Iowa Makes It Five Straight Over Indiana

Kent McCausland scored 15 points and Ryan Luehrsmann added 11 Thursday to lead No. 21 Iowa to a 67-52 victory over No. 8 Indiana in their Big Ten opener at Iowa City, Iowa, on Thursday.

Guy Rucker, who finished with seven rebounds and four points, played an inspired second half for the Hawkeyes (10-1), who won their eighth consecutive game and fifth in a row over the Hoosiers.

Rob Turner scored 12 points and Luke Recker 11 for Indiana (13-3), which had a five-game winning streak.

Iowa, shooting 45% from three-point range to lead the league, hit five of 11 long-range shots, including three by McCausland, to open a 31-27 halftime lead.

Cold shooting and turnovers--Indiana committed 20--continued to plague the Hoosiers.

No. 15 New Mexico 67, Coppin St. 61--Kenny Thomas scored 23 points, pulled down six rebounds and had a key steal and assist to lead the Lobos over the Eagles at Albuquerque.

With 4:23 remaining and the Lobos (11-1) up, 55-54, Thomas picked Coppin State’s Fred Warrick clean as he drove to the basket and heaved a downcourt pass to Roland Hannah for a breakaway dunk.

WOMEN

No. 6 North Carolina 93, Hampton 50--LaQuanda Barksdale hit her first 10 shots and finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill, N.C.

Six Tar Heels scored in double figures, with Chanel Wright getting 13 points to move into 10th place on North Carolina’s career scoring list with 1,556.

North Carolina’s 15 victories so far this season are the most of any team, men’s or women’s, in NCAA Division I play. The victory was the ninth in a row for the Tar Heels and their 56th consecutive against a nonconference opponent at home.

No. 11 Colorado State 81, Radford 43--Heather Haanen scored 16 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Rams to victory over Radford at Fort Collins, Colo. Haanen led five players in double figures for Colorado State (14-1). Becky Hammon followed with 15 points, Angie Gorton with 13 and Katie Whiteside and Katie Cronin each 10.
