Tarkanian Becomes Member of the 700 Club
Jerry Tarkanian ushered in the New Year with his 700th career victory and resolved to retire before piling up a hundred more.
“I couldn’t remember when my 600th win was. I will remember this one and I can guarantee you, you won’t see 800,” Tarkanian said after Fresno State defeated No. 15 New Mexico, 86-80.
Tarkanian, in his fourth season at Fresno, will remember Monday night’s game for more than one reason.
The defeat of the Lobos was Fresno State’s first over a ranked opponent since beating then-No. 8 Utah in 1995-96, the season Tarkanian took over at his alma mater.
He is in his 28th season at a major college and working under an extended contract at Fresno State. His 700-162 record gives him a winning percentage of .812 that ranks fourth in major college history.
