Garden Grove Unified School District Supt. Ronald N. Walter announced this week that he will retire after spending more than three decades in one of the largest and most diverse school systems in the state.

“It has been an honor to have been part of our district team,” said Walter, of Yorba Linda. “But there’s a time when you realize there are things you need to do and you have the opportunity to enjoy them. I’m ready for that.”

Walter, 62, will leave in May and plans to travel, spend more time with his family and continue educational interests as a volunteer and college instructor. His departure was announced at Tuesday’s board meeting.

For five years, Walter served at the top post for a district of 47,000 students, the 11-largest school system in California. His career in education began in 1958 as a math teacher in Detroit public schools.
