The City Council is waiting for the courts to resolve a dispute over a vacant shopping center located at North Puente Street and West Central Avenue. The city hopes to revive the center in the wake of complaints from local senior citizens that there is no nearby shopping.

A major supermarket left the center several years ago, but continues to hold onto its lease, preventing another market from moving in, critics said. That led to a tussle in the courts with the center’s owner and the supermarket. In February, the trial courts will decide whether the center owners should receive monetary compensation from the supermarket or terminate the lease. The city has decided not to make any moves until the matter is resolved, although the council will revisit the issue Feb. 16.
