Jan Hester hopes to save her house.

Faced with a looming $230,000 debt including a $105,000 mortgage, Hester thought she would have to sell the “Y House,” the YWCA of North Orange County headquarters at 321 N. Pomona Ave. But after a holiday plea for funds which raised about $9,000 last month and with plans for a major fund-raiser Feb. 12 at the Hyatt Regency Alicante in Garden Grove, Hester, the executive director of the YWCA of North Orange County, is optimistic.

“I don’t see a worst-case scenario. There’s only the best-case scenario,” Hester said. “We’ve had a lot of people come forward to help us help ourselves.”

Janet Brown, YWCA spokeswoman said the public financial support is a good start to resolve the agency’s debt, but more needs to be done, she said. The agency has already shut down its Child Development Center which provided free and low-cost care for children, is relocating its breast cancer awareness program and plans to sell off another property.

The agency’s financial problems grew as grant money from governments and private organizations dwindled over the years.
