Three local businesses have been honored by Ventura County Supervisor Judy Mikels for service to Simi Valley and Moorpark.

“Having been in business myself and having been approached by nonprofits . . . I know how hard it is for businesses to get involved,” Mikels said.

Two Simi businesses, Simi Valley Hospital and Troop Real Estate, and Transit Mixed Concrete of Moorpark received Mikels’ annual Business Involvement Award.

It is important for businesses to draw from their bottom line and aid their communities, Mikels said.

“If we don’t care about the community, we don’t belong here,” she said.

For its efforts to open a sexual assault treatment center, the hospital received a Citation for Outstanding Service to the Community, which is presented once every four years.

The hospital set aside a room for the center, which was scheduled to open last month, and paid for staff training.

Establishing the center cost about $40,000, according to Alan Rice, hospital president. Much of the money came from donations.

Troop Real Estate and its owner, Brian Troop, were honored for volunteering for nonprofit groups in Simi Valley, Mikels said.

Transit Mixed Concrete assisted during flooding in Somis last year during El Nino rains.

The company provided sand to hold back the water, free of charge and on a moment’s notice, Mikels said.

“It’s nice to be able to pick up the phone and say, ‘Help,’ and get the response,” Mikels said.

Past award recipients include Comcast Cablevision, G. I. Rubbish Co., Moorpark Martial Arts Center and Bugle Boy Industries.
