L.A. Mayor’s Power

Share

* Re “Mayor Needs Full Firing Power,” by Susan Estrich, Commentary, Jan. 5:

Institutional memory is often useful in cutting through the con- flicting propaganda seeping out of City Hall relative to critical decisions being made by the two charter commissions. Estrich’s screed fails to mention the consequences of absolute mayoral power that led to the worst corruption scandal in the city’s history--the 1938 recall of Mayor Frank Shaw. Also, as Estrich should know, the mayor is not the only citywide elected official, as the offices of city attorney and controller attest.
