School Funding

Share

* Re “Study Lays Out Problems State Faces,” Dec. 30: One area I would like to see addressed is the fact that each school district in California is funded at a different rate. This is based on a formula that was created in the 1970s. This funding formula needs to be addressed, as the school populations have greatly changed since this time. Thus, the statement that California schools receive $5,327 per child per year is not true. Many school districts, such as Torrance Unified, receive less than $4,400 per child per year. That puts the education spending for these children way below the state average, not to mention the federal average funding.
