Flyers Live Up to Their Name

John Vanbiesbrouck gained his second consecutive shutout as the Philadelphia Flyers defeated the Nashville Predators, 8-0, Monday night to extend their unbeaten streak to 14 games. It was the third shutout in a row for the Flyers.

John LeClair, who leads the NHL with 25 goals, had two of Philadelphia’s season-high four power-play goals against the Predators, in the Flyers’ highest offensive output of the season.

Eric Lindros, added three assists and a goal as the Flyers improved to 9-0-5 during the streak, the NHL’s second longest of the season. Philadelphia is also unbeaten (9-0-4) against Western Conference teams.

Ottawa 4, New Jersey 2--Daniel Alfredsson broke a tie early in the third period and the Senators extended their franchise-record unbeaten streak to nine games (7-0-2) with a victory over the Devils at East Rutherford, N.J.

Alexei Yashin, Andreas Johansson and Marian Hossa also scored as Ottawa won its fourth in a row. Damian Rhodes, who shut out New Jersey on Jan. 2, had 20 saves.

Montreal 3, St. Louis 1--Jason Dawe scored his first goal for the Canadiens, who won for the seventh time in eight games, defeating the Blues at Montreal.

Dawe’s first-period goal was his first in 12 games since being claimed off waivers from the New York Islanders on Dec. 15. Shayne Corson got the winner in the second.

Washington 4, New York Islanders 3--Sergei Gonchar scored twice as the Capitals stretched their winning streak to a season-high four games by defeating the Islanders at Washington, spoiling the debut of goaltender Felix Potvin.

Potvin, acquired from Toronto on Jan. 9 for Bryan Berard, made 31 saves but could not prevent New York’s winless streak from reaching eight games (0-7-1).

Phoenix 1, Buffalo 0--Dallas Drake scored with 16:25 remaining and all-star Nikolai Khabibulin made 23 saves for his fourth shutout of the season as the Coyotes won for only the second time in their last seven home games.

The shutout was Khabibulin’s 17th, but only his fourth against an Eastern Conference opponent.
