Council Rejects Funding for Injunctions on Gangs
The City Council has opposed spending $100,000 to finance court-ordered injunctions that would restrict the activities of gang members.
Council members voted 3 to 1 against spending the money on attorneys fees to obtain court-ordered injunctions to bar gang members from congregating or from using cellular phones and other types of communications technology.
Councilman Edward Rodarte, a reserve Los Angeles police officer who has long advocated the use of injunctions, was the only council member to support the expenditure. Councilman Edward Chavez was absent.
The council vote came after a report from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department indicated that gang activity in the city was under control.
Civil rights activists and other opponents of the injunctions have said police tend to arrest individuals for legal activities such as carrying pagers.
