City Council to Vote on Large Housing Project

Share

The City Council is expected to vote Thursday on whether to approve the largest housing development in the San Gabriel Valley in more than a decade, city officials said.

Council members met Monday to discuss the massive project, which calls for more than 1,600 homes to be built on what is now the Monrovia Nursery on the eastside of Azusa.

Amid demands for a less densely populated development during the last few months, the Lewis Homes project has been scaled back from 2,200 homes, apartments and townhomes to about 1,600 units.

Support for the project is far from unanimous among the council. Two of the five council members, Mayor Cristina Madrid and Councilman Joseph Rocha, have at times voiced opposition to the scale of the project and the number of units.

But Councilman Dick Stanford said Monday that he expects a majority of the council to approve the project.

The project could change the face of Azusa, a blue-collar city of 41,000 that is known for its quarry companies and large factories in the foothills of San Gabriel Mountains, city officials said. As part of the 520-acre development, a new school and parks would be built.

The council is scheduled to meet Thursday at 6:30 p.m. in the Library Auditorium, 729 N. Dalton Ave.
