City Council members have postponed until next week a decision on what they might do to halt construction of a new complex for the Orange County High School of the Arts.

Council members listened to residents and parents in the Los Alamitos Unified School District for more than three hours Monday as they debated the district’s plans to build the school on Bloomfield Street just north of Katella Avenue.

Nearby residents said the extra traffic would be unbearable, but supporters of the school said the impact could be managed. City officials contend that the district should conduct a full environmental impact report. But district officials claim to be exempt from the state’s environmental act.

Council members discussed the issue in closed session early Tuesday morning. They will continue the closed meeting Jan. 20 at 6 p.m.
