Assistant City Atty. Jerry Scheer has been promoted to city attorney by the City Council. Scheer replaces Tom Kathe, who resigned last month after nine years with the city to take a position in Florida.

Scheer was hired as a deputy city attorney 12 years ago and was promoted to assistant city attorney three years later. Scheer, who made $9,266 a month as assistant city attorney, was given about a 9% pay raise.

Before he was hired by the city, Scheer was a partner in a private law firm and spent time on the bench as a Superior Court commissioner. His public sector experience includes serving as a litigator in the county counsel offices of Riverside and Orange counties.
