Two people, including a man who rose from a wheelchair, were shot to death by Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies in separate incidents Saturday.

Shortly after noon, deputies killed an apparently suicidal 49-year-old man in Malibu who they said was threatening them with scissors.

Arriving at a bungalow in the 27300 block of Pacific Coast Highway, deputies encountered a man who they believed was trying to kill himself by stabbing his chest with a steak knife, officials said.

Deputies tried to talk the man into dropping the weapon, then shot him with stun bags and used pepper spray in an effort to subdue him, said Sgt. George Ducoulombier. The man dropped the knife, but then picked up scissors and charged the deputies, Ducoulombier said.

In the second shooting, deputies were called to the 1000 block of West 88th Street in the Athens area of South Los Angeles County about 3:15 p.m. to investigate reports of shots being fired.

As they checked out the area, deputies saw from a distance a man in a wheelchair who matched the description of a person involved in a shooting in Los Angeles earlier in the day, a Sheriff’s Department statement said. As they approached, they saw the man get out of the wheelchair and run away. When the deputies turned a corner, they encountered the suspect pointing a large handgun at them and they opened fire, deputies said.
