NAACP Hosts Secession, Youth Education Forums

Share

The San Fernando Valley Branch of the NAACP will hold two community forums Monday in commemoration of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

Valley NAACP president, the Rev. Zedar E. Broadous, said the events are part of the association’s 1999 theme: rekindling the spirit by providing opportunities to discuss important issues affecting San Fernando Valley minority communities.

Both forums are free to the public and will be held at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 11266 Glenoaks Blvd., Pacoima.

The 11 a.m. session will focus on youth education in minority communities and career opportunities that are available.

“We’ll talk about everything from scholarship opportunities to historical black tours and how to get involved with your community,” said Clifford Banks, Valley NAACP project coordinator.

The 1 p.m. forum will deal with Valley secession issues, including a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of Valley cityhood.

“We want to educate the community on what faces them if it does happen--what to do and if it will actually benefit minorities,” Banks said.
