Mayor David Shawver said he does not want the city to pay for second-rate construction work, citing the council meeting last week concerning the type II slurry applied on Cerritos Avenue a month ago. He said the appearance of the overlay and the work’s quality are questionable.

The city contracted with Excel Paving to apply the slurry as the last phase of the storm drain project. The slurry, a protective coating, was applied to help rejuvenate the asphalt and extend the life of the pavement, reducing the likelihood of more expensive road repairs in the future, City Manager Terry Matz said.

The city applied a fog seal, another protective coating, on the slurry Thursday to enhance the street’s appearance. Officials plan to discuss the contract’s warranty with Excel Paving.
