Rockers Are Never Too Old for Tight Pants, Basic Black
Who Was There: The film’s stars Bill Nighy, Jimmy Nail and Juliet Aubrey; director Brian Gibson; producer Amanda Marmot; writers and executive producers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, and music supervisor Tarquin Gotch. Also: John Taylor of Duran Duran, Johnny Rivers, Adam Duritz of Counting Crows, Michael Chain and Doug Fieger, both of the Knack, and Alana Stewart.
The Look: Most everyone showed up in black, modish rock frocks. Gone are the days of gas-station attendant shirts, backward baseball caps, and bandanas emblazoned with skulls.
Overheard: Fieger, asked whether he felt middle-aged, responded, “Well, I don’t know what that is, but if I’m middle-aged that means I’m gonna live to be 92, so I don’t mind.”
Overheard, Part II: “I went through four pairs of very tight, very unspeakably tight trousers doing high kicks for the finale number,” said Nighy, who plays lead singer Ray in the movie. “I trashed them after we finished the film. But the most disturbing thing I found was that I was required to wear my shirt three buttons open down to the navel. I’ve got the worst chest. That was too shaky for me.”
The Buzz: The flick, which combines rock with a heart-tugging tale, is being compared to last year’s sleeper hit “The Full Monty,” as in “The Full Monty meets The Commitments.”
