Thinking About Prices

Regarding “Leave and Learn” (Jan. 10): Sometimes it appears as though The Times has lost sight of its public. Do any of your travel writers ever visit sites affordable to the average Californian?

For example, among the 10 “thinking tours” mentioned are the following per-person prices: Midway, $2,464, for one week; Kamchatka, Russia, $7,550 for 16 days; Ireland, $1,435 for one week; Lapland birding, $3,945 for 14 days; Arctic circumnavigation, $5,890 for two months; Tuscan summer, $3,895 for 11 days; eclipse in Turkey, $2,750 for five days; coaching in Bavaria, $3,260 for six days; and the architecture tour by jet, $29,950 for 19 days.

At an average price of nearly $500 per day, it would seem that the real “thinking” enters only when the participants continue to pay off their credit cards.
