The City Council last week voted 3 to 2 against putting the city’s first skateboard park in San Gorgonio Park. The council majority said San Gorgonio is already highly used and surrounded by homes. But members did unanimously agree to consider locating the skate park at Richard T. Steed Memorial Park at their next meeting.

“I don’t want to delay this, but Steed park needs to be studied further,” said Councilwoman Susan Ritschel, who cast the swing vote. Mayor Lois R. Berg and Councilman G. Wayne Eggleston also voted against the site after dozens of residents, citing potential noise and vandalism, protested the San Gorgonio site.

Dozens of young skateboarders were on hand to urge the council to build the park. Councilmen Scott Diehl and Jim Dahl voted for the San Gorgonio site, saying that possible problems could be addressed with tighter restrictions.
