Hebert Weak, but Feels Better

Duck goalie Guy Hebert gave reporters a detailed account of the stomach virus that sidelined him for two games last week, but we’ll spare you the gory details.

“The only time I felt that bad in my life was when I had ‘mono’ [mononucleosis] in college,” Hebert said Monday after joining teammates for their first practice after the all-star break. “I feel sort of back to normal.”

Hebert hopes to play Wednesday against the Colorado Avalanche, but said he’s still feeling a bit weak. He lost 10 pounds from his playing weight of 184 pounds during the illness.

“It’s been about 10 days and I could feel a lot better than I do right now,” Hebert said. “[Today] will be an important day. I’m sure I’ll feel better [today]. Or worse.”

If Hebert can’t play Wednesday, backup Dominic Roussel will start for the third consecutive game.

All-Star wingers Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne did not practice Monday, arriving from Tampa, Fla., just a few hours before the Ducks took the ice.

“I’m not too worried about the conditioning of those two guys,” Coach Craig Hartsburg said after putting the Ducks through an hourlong practice that featured more skating than drills.

Left wing Jim McKenzie, sidelined since suffering a deep cut near his right eye Jan. 10, is expected to play Wednesday against Colorado.
