Councilman Paul Yost was elected mayor Monday, thwarting an attempt to have acting Mayor Patricia Campbell make her position permanent. Campbell, the mayor pro tem, had been acting as mayor for the last month after former Mayor George Brown resigned following his election to the Coast Community College District board.

Councilman Shawn Boyd had nominated Campbell to be mayor, hoping to become mayor pro tem himself, but the move lost on a 2-3 vote. Yost’s candidacy was supported by William Doane and Paul Snow, who was sworn in Monday to fill Brown’s council spot; his first official action was the mayoral vote. Campbell was reelected as mayor pro tem.

Yost’s term will last all of six meetings, because the council has to choose a new mayor in May when Brown’s term would have expired.
