The City Council voted 3 to 2 earlier this month to allocate $1,500 from the city’s general fund to close a 4-foot-by-6-inch wall opening that spans the south side of Cerritos Avenue and the northerly point of the Courson Drive cul-de-sac. Residents on Courson Drive had requested the action.

The opening was created in 1956 to allow for a gutter to drain water from the homes to Cerritos Avenue, Public Works Director Michael Kim said. But with the completion of the Cerritos Storm Drain Project last year, the hole in the wall was no longer necessary, Kim said. Councilmen William Estrada and Brian Donahue voted against funding the project, saying that the wall is on private property and that the city does not have a “compelling reason” to alter the wall. The city will begin work on the wall this week, Kim said.
