Off Campus Pub: Schooled in Leisure Pursuits

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Boring lectures and infinite homework become memories when partyers hit the dance floor Thursday nights at the Off Campus Pub in Fullerton.

The pub, a short distance from Cal State Fullerton, has enjoyed a massive Thursday night enrollment since it opened in 1994. Its no-cover-charge policy (excluding a few holidays and events) sometimes causes hefty lines, but that doesn’t seem to stop those who get in from raging.

Best of all, $1.75 for domestic drafts and wells on Thursdays allows starving students to save their money for important things--like the $4 plastic cup at Friday’s fraternity keg party.

Dancers can shake their stuff to their favorite alternative and rock by local bands such as Angry Inch or the Gypsy Beggars. DJs Kevin, Matt or Jason keep the tunes going when the band needs a breather.

When the air becomes scarce on the dance floor, make a quick dash for the patio, where tents and heat lamps will keep your hair from frizzing out and a bar will keep you from drying out.

One mustn’t agonize over what to wear to Off Campus. The no-dress-code rule gives students the freedom to wear their fashion of choice--usually jeans.

You’ll also see dolled-up young women who drink beer and still manage to retain their Barbie-esque figures, as well as guys in slacks sporting “I’m Mr. Big Stud” attitudes.

Walls covered in sports paraphernalia inspire competitive types to battle it out at pool and darts. The decor is especially appropriate when Off Campus tunes in to football, baseball and other sports events on its 20 TVs.

Football fans might want to experience Super Bowl XXXIII this Sunday on one of three 60-plus-inch big-screen TVs. The event will feature Miller and Bud Girls in shorts and bathing suits, 75-cent tacos, $2 draft specials and a disc jockey-ed postgame party. Reserved seating is available with an entree purchase.

The kitchen, which opens at 11 a.m. daily, serves up vittles such as pasta, pizza, seafood and steak. Average price of an entree is $7.

The Off Campus party isn’t limited to college students and sports fanatics. A Hall of Fame board filled with snapshots of previous events hangs near the entrance, cuing newcomers to Off Campus’ potential for fun on any given night. Karaoke Night on Tuesdays gives one and all the chance to make fools of themselves. Fridays and Saturdays feature bands and DJs.

Happy hour, from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, boasts a complimentary buffet, half-priced pizza and $2 wines, wells and domestic drafts.
