City leaders this week got their first look at the new Orange County Airport Alliance, a group they will soon debate joining and partially funding. The goal of the broad-based alliance of north and central county cities and groups is to disseminate information about an international airport at the El Toro Marine base.

“The alliance would carry that airport message independent of Newport Beach,” said Peggy Ducey, deputy city manager. “Our members believe that if accurate information gets out, the choice of an airport at El Toro is an easy one.”

The council is scheduled to make a more formal decision on its airport strategy at a goal-setting session Saturday, starting at 8 a.m. at the Hyatt Newporter, 1107 Jamboree Road. That decision may include a $350,000 grant to make up the group’s budget for the first six months. Information: (949) 644-3309.
