Plans for monuments to identify the Colony Historic District--the central city area that German immigrants called home in the mid-1800s--have been approved by the City Council.

Since 1996, city staff and a committee of residents have been working to develop ways to protect, preserve and stabilize the homes and buildings of the area, bounded by North, South, East and West streets. The design for the monuments, created by artist Richard Turner, includes fluted columns, lighting and possibly historical plaques. About $300,000 in federal grant money will be used to construct and install the monuments.
