Teenager Killed, Man Wounded in Shooting

A teenager was killed and a man wounded early Thursday after gunfire erupted in a residential neighborhood, police said.

Daniel Vilchez, 17, of Panorama City, was pronounced dead after being shot an unspecified number of times in front of an apartment complex in the 9000 block of Burnet Avenue, according to LAPD Det. Mike Oppelt. He said the shooting occurred in an area known for drug dealing.

Another man, 23-year-old Otto Vega, also of Panorama City, was taken to a local hospital. Police would not release any details on his injuries and his condition was unavailable Thursday afternoon.

"It appears this was either drug-related or connected to robbery," Oppelt said.

Neighbors heard several gunshots about 4 a.m. and called 911.
