Suit Says Baca Engaged in Unfair Labor Practices
A union representing Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies has filed a complaint against Sheriff Lee Baca alleging that he engaged in unfair labor practices.
In a nine-page filing submitted Wednesday to the county Employee Relations Commission, executives for the Assn. for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs allege that Baca aligned himself with a group of disgruntled deputies trying to dissolve the powerful union.
“Between Dec. 12, 1998, and May 30, 1999, the sheriff, his command staff, subordinates and agents, permitted the members of the Stop ALADS group, while on duty and in uniform . . . to solicit members of ALADS to join a ‘recall movement,’ ” according to the complaint, which seeks an official investigation of the alleged acts.
Sheriff’s officials said they would not comment on the matter until they have a chance to review the complaint.
