Jim Brown Pleads Not Guilty to Domestic Violence

Share

Hall of Fame football star Jim Brown pleaded not guilty Friday to misdemeanor charges related to a violent argument with his wife in June.

Brown, one of the great all-time running backs, who set rushing and scoring records for the Cleveland Browns in the 1960s, faces one count of making terrorist threats and one count of vandalism. Police arrested Brown on June 15 after his wife, Monique Brown, called 911.

Prosecutors charge that Brown threatened to kill his wife and broke out the windows of her car with a shovel, said Lara Bloomquist, who supervises the domestic violence unit for the Los Angeles city attorney’s office.

Brown, 63, is scheduled for trial Aug. 17.

Bloomquist said Monique Brown, 25, is on the witness list for the proceedings, but “whether she’ll be for the prosecution remains to be seen.”

Monique Brown has recanted her original accusation, saying this week that the case was overblown. Bloomquist said that is not unusual. She said about two-thirds of victims in the domestic violence cases her office handles recant their stories.

If convicted, Brown could face as much as a year and a half in County Jail, three years’ probation and counseling.
