Should Any Parents Be Allowed at Wimbledon?

We know it is cool to be Newport Beach blase, but the recent happenings at Wimbledon, where Lindsay Davenport took the women’s crown from seven-time champion Steffi Graf and then had no family members from Orange County present to congratulate her, is hard to figure.

The other women players had mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sponsors, publicists, trainers, agents and busloads of hometown rooters cheering them on.

If it was my daughter I’d hock the farm and rent a jet and take everyone to this landmark event.

To begin her July 3 article by saying, “It’s hard to be cynical about Alexandra’s success on the court,” and then taking only three paragraphs to do so, Diane Pucin only strengthens my belief that the L.A. Times is more concerned with reporting gossip and innuendo than sports facts.
