Low Stanford 9 reading scores for freshmen in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District have puzzled school officials, who said they will spend the summer coming up with ways to improve the curriculum.
Scores released by the district last month show ninth-graders ranked at the 48th percentile nationally in reading. As eighth-graders, the same students were in the 60th percentile.
The Stanford 9 exams are used to test students in elementary and middle schools. Other subject areas covered by the tests--math, language, science and social science--were above the 50th percentile for the district.
