Roundup Campaign Targets Stray Dogs
Wilshire Division police officers teamed up Monday with personnel from the city’s Department of Animal Services to round up stray dogs as part of Operation Dog Pack.
The roundup is scheduled to move throughout the city. Officials estimate that as many as 44,000 dogs--about 40% of them powerful pit bulls--are roaming the city’s streets.
A spokesman said areas where the problem of stray dogs is especially severe include South Los Angeles, the east San Fernando Valley and Harbor area.
Officials said dogs that are healthy and of sound temperament will be put up for adoption. Others will be euthanized.
There was no estimate of how many strays were rounded up Monday.
A similar operation last month in Pacoima led to the capture of 20 animals.
