Brewers Return to Action

The crumpled side of Miller Park was clearly visible to fans who watched the Milwaukee Brewers start their second half with a doubleheader split Friday.

Baseball was back at County Stadium, but the mood was far from festive in the wake of an accident that killed three workers at the site of the new ballpark under construction next door.

The Brewers beat the Kansas City Royals, 2-0, in the first game and lost, 12-10, in the nightcap of a doubleheader that was scheduled after the accident forced the postponement of Thursday’s game.

Three workers died Wednesday when a giant crane fell into the side of Miller Park, the stadium being built only yards from County Stadium’s outfield bleachers.

With their new home in disarray and the franchise in confusion, the Brewers played their first games at County Stadium in three weeks. The Brewers made a 12-game trip before the All-Star break.

Both teams and the sparse crowd observed a moment of silence before the game, and the stadium flag flew at half-staff. The Brewers are not allowing fans to sit in the outfield bleachers--the area of the old park closest to the accident scene--until further notice.

The Brewers also will soon begin wearing a patch honoring the three ironworkers. County Stadium was nearly empty for the first game, and the vacant bleachers gave the game a funereal aura.
