Firefighters from four agencies converged on Griffith Park on Sunday to contain a blaze that quickly burned about 48 acres of brush near the site of the old Los Angeles Zoo.

The fire never threatened homes and no injuries were reported, officials said.

About 200 firefighters from the Los Angeles City, Los Angeles County, Glendale and Burbank departments battled the blaze, which broke out about 2:20 p.m. in a remote area near Griffith Park and Crystal Springs drives, said Los Angeles City Fire Capt. Greg Terrill.

Park rangers notified fire officials after spotting burning brush about 15 yards from the old zoo, in the park’s eastern area, where people sometimes picnic, said Senior Park Ranger Tom Cotter.

Fanned by winds, the fire moved into an open area near Vista del Valle, he said. The area was immediately evacuated as firefighters moved in engines and crews.

Three air ships from the Los Angeles county and city fire departments attacked the blaze with water drops, as ground crews set up fire lines.

The fire was contained about 4 p.m.

Terrill said the cause of the blaze was not known.

Last Sunday, two small fires caused by lightning broke out in the park but were quickly extinguished, Cotter said.
