‘South Park’ Standards

I wonder what Noel Coward would think of Paramount exec Rob Friedman’s description of “South Park” as “sophisticated comedy” (“Rated ‘R’--as in Ridicule,” by Richard Natale, June 28).

“South Park” brings to mind a program that appeared briefly a number of years ago called “Garbage Pail Kids.” Now that was really highbrow. But judging by the suave yet subtly revealing portrait of Matt Stone and Trey Parker you ran, it’s obvious they will soon reach and surpass that lofty standard. I look forward to their breaking new wind, I mean, new ground in their landfill of laughter.

Despite the claims of Jack Valenti and his peers, Natale’s article once again shows that the Motion Picture Assn. of America’s rating system is strictly arbitrary.

Trey Parker’s 1998 independent film “Orgazmo” was rated NC-17 for thought crimes. I have seen many R-rated studio films with more nudity, violence and “language” and less laughs than “Orgazmo.”

Here’s hoping the success of the “South Park” movie is sweet revenge!
