House Fire Leaves Families Homeless

A midday house fire left more than a dozen Oxnard residents homeless Sunday, according to fire officials.

The blaze started just before noon in the 1600 block of Crawford Street. Shortly after it broke out, smoke quickly filled the sky, visible as far as two miles away.

About 16 firefighters extinguished the blaze in about 30 minutes. No one was injured, but the fire caused $45,000 in damage to the structure and destroyed $15,000 in personal property, said Terry McAnally, a battalion chief for the Oxnard Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but officials believe the source was either an electrical problem or a candle that was left burning.

The American Red Cross helped the three or four families who lived in the single-story home find temporary shelter.
