LAKE FOREST
Construction of a Ridge Route Drive pedestrian tunnel will finally start Wednesday. The tunnel will allow pedestrians to cross under railroad tracks without sharing a nearby traffic tunnel with cars.
“It’s very simple,” contractor Derek Jorgensen said. “We plan to construct a concrete box and push it underneath the railroad tracks.”
City Engineer Bob Woodings said some eucalyptus trees will have to be removed from the site so sidewalks can be built on either side of the tunnel. Sidewalks will be curved “to save as many trees as possible,” Woodings said.
Jorgensen said he plans to complete the project by Oct. 13.
