Property Tax Cuts

Re “Probation Officers Strain to Keep Up With Caseloads,” July 26: If I could converse with Howard Jarvis, the deceased leader of the 1978 taxpayer reform movement, I’d like to tell him what a mess his (and his followers’) efforts have left this city in. The ratio of 1,000 parolees to one parole officer makes an absolute mockery of the very idea of paroling felons. We may all have a few more dollars in the bank due to lowered taxes, but that doesn’t make me sleep any better at night, knowing that out on the streets there are thousands of ex-cons roaming around without any supervision.

Let’s face it, the quality of life in this city has steadily declined for the last 20 years--about the same length of time since Jarvis and his crew dismantled the status quo.
