The 17th annual Salute to Recreation family festival comes to Northridge Recreation Center on Friday.

The three-day event will feature carnival rides, game booths, an international village, dancing, drill teams, continuous live music on four stages and a children’s area with a petting zoo.

“It’s the Valley region’s largest event of the year,” said Charles Chavoor, spokesman for the event.

Other activities include a dance for senior citizens, a drawing for the rooky collector’s cards of athletes Michael Jordan and Mark McGwire, a sports zone with rock-climbing apparatus and a hang-gliding simulator.

Members of the L.A. Sparks, of the Women’s National Basketball Assn., will be among the scheduled guests.

The free festival was first held in 1982 to acquaint the community with the activities and services of the Department of Parks and Recreation, which sponsors the event. About 100,000 people are expected to attend this weekend.

The activities are scheduled from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Friday; 10 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at the Northridge Recreation Center, 10058 Reseda Blvd.
