The city has waged a nearly decadelong campaign to remove underground fuel tanks and install above-ground tanks to better monitor operation and avoid spillage. Now the last underground tank is ready to go, said Darryl Meekhof, city fleet and facility manager. The City Council last month approved a $26,345 bid for Cypress-based Rose Environmental Service to remove the 500-gallon tank at Fire Station No. 10 on Monta Vista Road. Meekhof said the tank’s removal, which should be accomplished within four weeks, follows independent laboratory tests that confirmed that some of the soil surrounding the tank had been contaminated. In addition, some of the tank’s piping was deteriorating, he said.
