King’s Kings?

Dave Taylor, the hockey team’s senior vice president and general manager, raised that possibility Tuesday when he interviewed Dave King for the vacant coaching position.

King, who has spent the last two seasons as an assistant with the Montreal Canadiens, is the third man interviewed by Taylor, joining former Buffalo Sabre coach Ted Nolan and Long Beach Ice Dog Coach John Van Boxmeer on the list of candidates to replace Larry Robinson, whose contract was not renewed at the end of the season.

Ahead is an interview Thursday with Dave Lewis, a former King and for the last 12 years an assistant with the Detroit Red Wings.

King coached the Calgary Flames for three seasons and coached the Canadian Olympic team to a silver medal at Albertville in 1992.

The winner of the coaching derby could find the job even more appealing, according to a story circulating in New York.

Winger Ziggy Palffy, who had 22 goals and 28 assists in 50 games with the Islanders after holding out, is about to be jettisoned, with the Kings, Rangers and expansion Atlanta Thrashers on a shopping list, according to the New York Daily News. Taylor was unavailable for comment on a proposed deal.
