Voters have elected Amen Rahh to the 4th District seat of the City Council, ousting incumbent Fred Cressel.

Rahh, a black studies professor at Cal State Long Beach, garnered 2,174 votes to Cressel’s 1,863, the city clerk’s office said Wednesday. Cressel, a Compton business owner, was first elected to the council in 1995.

Tuesday’s election concluded a heated race between the two men, who were the top vote-getters among the six candidates for the 4th District in the April 20 primary. In the other council post up for grabs this year, 1st District incumbent Delores Zurita had won reelection in the primary.
