DODGERS REPORT

The Dodgers agreed Wednesday to allow the city of Vero Beach and Indian River County time to develop a new proposal designed to keep the team’s spring home in Florida.

Florida Gov. Jeb Bush last week vetoed a bill that would have provided $7.5 million toward helping the city and county buy Dodgertown, renovate it and lease it back to the team. Although $12.5 million in city and county funding remains available, the Dodgers’ wish list might require twice that much money to fulfill.

In a meeting Wednesday, the Dodgers told Florida officials the team would continue to pursue alternatives. The Dodgers also encouraged the city and county to prepare a new proposal, which county administrator Jim Chandler said he hoped could be completed within 10 days.

“Obviously, it’s going to be extremely difficult,” Chandler said.

The Dodgers have shown no inclination, Chandler said, to retain ownership of Dodgertown and wait for a more favorable financial climate in which to seek state funding. The Fort McDowell (Ariz.) Indian Community also has been unable to obtain state funding for a proposed $50-million training complex for the Dodgers, and Fort McDowell officials are currently revising their proposal to eliminate costly housing and recreational facilities.
