Rain Can’t Dampen Ardor Between Gipsy Kings and Fans

Share

Not even an unseasonably chilly and rainy night could deter Gipsy Kings fans from turning out in force Thursday for the opening performance of a three-night run at the Greek Theatre.

As a matter of fact, the rain, which became considerably more than a light misting by the middle of the program’s first half, seemed to trigger a we’re-all-in-this-together reaction from the capacity crowd. Hunkered down under umbrellas, plastic sheets, raincoats and anything else that could provide cover, they continually leaped to their feet to sing along with the choruses and sway to the infectious, flamenco-style rhythms. It wasn’t Woodstock by a long shot, but for many it was clearly a memorable, we-were-there kind of evening.

The Gipsy Kings reacted to the unusual circumstances with a spirited performance. The seven guitarists-singers from the south of France have developed an irresistibly appealing (and successful) formula. In virtually every tune, the brawny voice of Nicolas Reyes took the lead over a swarm of guitar strumming that vigorously laid down foot-tapping rumba flamenca rhythms. Other members occasionally stepped into the vocal spotlight, with guitarist Tonino Baliardo adding snatches of fiery flamenco soloing.

The group (which also included a backup rhythm section) programmed many of the familiar hits included in its recent compilation albums, but the essence of a Kings performance always centers on happy feelings and good times. And there were plenty to go around, even on a night proving that it really does sometimes rain in Southern California.
