Three Ring Survives Foul Claim to Win Acorn Stakes at Belmont
Three Ring, racing for the first time since running last in the Kentucky Derby, survived a foul claim at Belmont Park on Friday and won the $200,000 Acorn Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.
After Three Ring had beaten Better Than Honour by a nose, Belmont’s three stewards disallowed an objection by Richard Migliore, Better Than Honour’s jockey, who claimed the winner had interfered with his mount in the stretch. Three Ring drifted out in the last 100 yards and appeared to brush Better Than Honour, who was running outside her, near the wire.
Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Three Ring paid $3 as the heavy favorite. She earned $120,000, running the mile in 1:36. Better Than Honour was half a length better than Madison’s Charm, the third-place finisher.
