The City Council on Monday approved the 1999-2000 budget for the Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center.

The $233,500 operating budget, of which $113,500 covers salaries, represents nearly a 3% increase over last year.

David Ralphe, the center’s general manager, said he is pleased by the amount and the direction the center is taking.

The cultural arts center presents plays, art exhibits and musical events.

“The budget reflects our goals,” he said. “We have a five-year plan, and we’re right on target in terms of percentages of growth and attendance.”

The center has been cleared to purchase a new copier, multimedia projector and industrial microwave oven, which Community Services Director Diane Jones said will improve efficiency and attract greater rental use of the facility.

Mayor Bill Davis said he is pleased at the work the staff and volunteers are doing at the 4-year-old center, particularly their increased fund-raising efforts.

“They have gained more ground this year than all other years combined,” he said.
